"To improve the quality of life in Sebastian by nurturing the balanced relationship between our citizens and our environment by protecting, preserving and promoting our natural resources" Chairperson Graves called the Natural Resources Board meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. 3. ROLL CALL PrPSent- Robin Graves, Chair Alan Northcott, Vice Chair Hank Kriss George Millar Also Present: Dorri Bosworth, Planner Jeanette Williams, Record Ann Lucier Al Alvarez Jerry Deredita Gil Gordian ing Secretary 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: December 3, 2013 Regular Meeting MOTION by Chairperson Graves and SECOND by Mr. Kriss to approve the December 3, 2013 minutes. 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS - None 6. PUBLIC INPUT - None 7. OLD BUSINESS - None 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Schedule 2014 island clean -up dates Chairperson Graves said they should join Keep Indian River Beautiful's (KIRB) scheduled clean -ups recently provided in an e-mail to the board members. She asked if there were any dates that the members cannot be available. Discussion followed on holding a quarterly clean -up except during the months of January and February because of inclement weather. It was the consensus of the Board to hold the first clean -up March 1 St, 2014. Natural Resources Board Meeting 2 January 7, 2014 B. Continuance of Earth Dav olannin The Planner confirmed that Waste Management would be available to hold the Community Shredding Event the same day as Earth Day on April 26th and she would continue to work out the details and advertising with Waste Management. Chairperson Graves said she would coordinate a food drive during the event. Mr. Deredita offered to ask the Food Policy Council to help with the drive. Ms. Graves reported that Ronald McDonald would not attend and asked if anyone knew if Hamilton the Hammer from the Habitat for Humanity will come. Mrs. Lucier responded that she has not heard from them. Mrs. Lucier reported that out of the 64 a -mails she sent out, she heard eight yes's and one no. She suggested noting the food drive on the vendor sign up sheets. Chairperson Graves said in response to her Linkedln request to provide children's activities /ways of getting children to eat right, she has heard from a national organization that educates parents and children on childhood obesity who might set up a table. She said she hoped some of the environmental organizations would bring mascots for the children. Mrs. Lucier reported that Kristen Beck with Florida Outdoor Center would like to have a paddling, seine netting, and interpretive nature /river walk bingo station. Ms. Graves said she hoped to hear from vegetable gardeners and wildlife artists as well. Mr. Gordian said he was working on music and food vendors. Chairperson Graves added that Jim Sunnycalb wanted to do a tribute to musician Pete Harris. *written a Mr. Northcott reported that local musician Thomas Bowman who has wrell�e song about Sebastian said he would come. He would also ask Ethan Kinkle and the Sebastian Middle School a cappella group to sing. Mr. Gordian said each musician would have about 45 minutes. Ms. Lucier said she would contact Home Depot Mr. Millar said he contacted the Fire Department and the number of fire extinguishers would depend on how many food vendors there would be. Ms. Graves said they could complete the permit about a month before the event when they have a better count. Mr. Kriss said when vendors start to respond, he will send out reminders as the event approaches. Mr. Deredita said he would contact a country radio station. Ms. Graves said she needs to know advertising costs to start fundraising. Mr. Deredita asked who made the past event street banners. It was suggested he check with Mike's Trophy & Awards, Total Print, or Signs of the Day. He asked for the verbiage of the past press releases. Discussion followed on holding the event from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. with set up at 8:00 a.m. Natural Resources Board Meeting 3 January 7, 2014 Q7 10 11 MEMBER MATTERS Mr. Kriss reported that he has new letter boxes but was still looking for nature - related stamps for the Stormwater Park. Ms. Lucier suggested scheduling different things during the Earth Day event to get people to come or stay longer. Chairperson Graves said that would be addressed in the advertising. Mr. Northcott reminded the Board there will be City Council Indian River Lagoon Workshop held January 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the Chambers. In response to Mr. Gordian, Mrs. Lucier said she did not have the Indian River Land Trust on her contact sheet but did have the Friends of St. Sebastian River who will be there. Chairperson Graves said she would get the vendor application out to everybody and discussion followed on door prizes. STAFF MATTERS — None It was noted the Chamber of Commerce was not on the list. The Planner suggested they may want to come to promote their environ tourism organizations and offered to provide the Chamber's e -mail address. Ms. Graves asked if the Board wanted to invite the softball /soccer leagues, the Boys and Girls Club, Cub Scouts to get the kids in. Mr. Gordian and Mr. Millar offered to contact the School Board.
