Subject: Oyster drilling info
I was going to start saving
Coconut bags at work but they are now coming in plastic mesh instead of coconut fiber. I am forwarding some
information on the drilling of oyster shells.
Thank you,
Rose Glaser
Hello Rose, we drill them dry with a standard countertop 1/4 hp drill press. Use a 3/16" masonry bit. A 4" or 6"
long bit. American made bits last much longer than foreign. Sturgis Lumber company in Vero beach has bits
made in USA. I wear a mask because the dust bothers my lungs after a couple hours. An experienced driller can
drill 250 to 300 an hour. Always wear leather gloves and eye protection and be ready to hit the kill switch if one
gets away from your grip and starts spinning on the drill bit. Set belts on drill press for approx 1400rpms to
prevent burning up the bit. Hope this helps.
