Ammoniation System for THM Control
I called Ed Wiess to discuss ammoniation equipment and chemical
costs. Ed said that he would recommend a 1000 gallon storage
tank for a five (5) year lease at $500 per year. The City would
be responsible for shipping of the tank from either Orlando or
Jacksonville. Concrete cradles would have to be constructed to
support the tank. Ed said that he will send me an ammonia sales
agreement and other information next week.
The ammonia costs 24 cents per pound which is between 18%-20%
below the scheduled retail prices.
If 150 lb. cylinders are used, the ammonia will cost between 65
cents to 70 cents per pound plus the cost of the freight. In
comparison, chlorine costs approximately $45 cents to 50 cents
per pound including freight. Therefore, using a 1000 gallon
storage tank costs much less than the 150 lb. cylinders.
I asked Ed if his firm was a sole source provider of ammonia in
the area. He said "no, but Bower Ammonia services a majority of
the utilities on the east coast of Florida". I asked him to
furnish, me with a list of of clients. He said he would when he
sent the information next week.

SUBJECT: Ammoniation
Cost approximately $3,000 to $59000 for a 3.3 H gal/day. The City
installed it themselves ten years ago. The City used a vacuum
system similar to a chlorination system. They used schedule 80 PVC
pipe.
They formed a slab and poured it. The City leased a large
horizontal ammonia tank for $1.00/year from an ammonia company.
They installed two (2) ammoniators and one back up. Vero did the
piping themselves. No electrical work is involved.
The ammonia is injected after the chlorine and before the filters.
