HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993 12 29 - Damaged Fire HydrantM 2 M 0 R A N D V M DATE: December 29, 1993 TO: Hydrant File FROM: Richard Votapka, Utilities Director SUBJECT: Damaged Fire Hydrant on the West side of Schumann Drive North of Englar Drive On Monday morning, December 27, 1993, the Police Department notified Nancy that the above hydrant had been knocked down by a vehicle. Nancy tried to reach our employees to go to the site but they were either at the wastewater plant or reading meters at the time. I drove to the site and arrived there around 9:10 a.m. The fire hydrant located on the west side of Schumann Drive approximately 150' north of Englar Drive had been hit by a car. The car's plastic bumper had been ripped off and was lying in the swale approximately 20' south of the fire hydrant. The hydrant had fortunately broken at its breakaway flange and the main valve was still intact. Therefore, there was no loss of water from the main at all. The hydrant is a 4-1/2" valve manufactured by Mueller in 1980. The hydrant itself suffered no damage other than the breakaway flange and bolts. It should be easy to repair once the parts are ordered. I will check with the Sebastian Police Department. Damage to the hydrant and cost of repairs should be paid by the motorist who knocked it down. Ron & Tom drove by and stopped. I had them load the hydrant on their truck to bring to the water treatment plant. They tried to shut off they hydrant valve but it didn't work. They'll have to check it at some other time and make sure it operates properly. I placed a valve box lid on top of the hydrant barrel as a temporary measure. I called Steve at Davis Meter Company on December 30, 1993 at 8:45 a.m. to order the spare parts for the hydrant. He'll send us a hydrant repair kit as soon as possible. Unfortunately, he doesn't stock the kit. Nancy Veidt notified the fire department of the damaged hydrant on December 30, 1993. We will need to inform the fire department when the hydrant is back in service. *lois : IU,. y d.•.'t t :r k ii- wax dC l ive," .6 Ci A% WAR •r• 114194. ZRV aeao/hydraot M M M 0 R A N D V M DATE: September 2, 1993 TO: Richard Votapka, Utilities Director FROM: Nancy Veidt, Clerical Assistant SUBJECT: Mueller Fire Hydrant Oil Reservoirs I called Mueller at (217) 423-4471 regarding the type of oil used in the fire hydrants and a dip stick to check the oil level. Mueller referred me to B & H Sales in Orlando (407) 855-8510 which is their local distributor. The gentleman I spoke to at B & H (I didn't get his name) stated that there was no type of dip stick for checking the oil levels. He suggested removing the oil screw on the top of the hydrant and sticking "a pencil or some other long, small object" inside to check the oil. He said the oil was a special hydrant oil manufactured by Mueller which could be ordered directly through Mueller or B & H Sales. Nueller aw ows..iooees ar. Simple and effective — available as option or retrofit This tamper -proof feature deters theft of water and hydrant parts, as well as damage caused by vandals. You have added assurance the fire hydrant will work when needed. It is an available option for new Mueller Centurion° Fire Hydrants and as a retrofit item for Centurion and Mueller Improved Fire Hydrants. When installed, the cap at the top of the hydrant spins freely preventing anyone using it to operate the main valve. In addition, its shape defeats removal using com- mon tools. The nut which holds operating parts inside the hydrant is also shaped so it cannot be gripped with ordinary tools and removed. Operating wrench has other uses The special operating wrench for Mueller hydrants with the tamper -proof feature is designed to slip between the cap and hold down nut in order to operate the main OPERATING valve. It will WRENCH FOR also operate non- TAMPER -PROOF er- roof Patented AND NON-TAMPER- tamper-proof ON-TAMPER- tam P P PROOF HYDRANT hydrants, adjusting for a variety of pentagon and square nut sizes. The operating wrench also has a hose hook. Many other tamper -proof designs require more complicated, single - purpose operating tools. Strong and corrosion -resistant materials The Mueller. design uses six simple parts made of ductile iron, bronze and hardened steel for maximum durability and corrosion resistance. Once assembled, these pieces cannot be easily disassembled without using the right tools. As a result, the tamper -proof and internal hydrant operating parts are inaccessible — and protected from damage by people as well as the effects of time and weather. STRONG, FREE-SPINNING ABUSE-RESISTANT / CAP EASY ~ OPERATION SHAPED WITH TO DEFEAT PROPER UNAUTHORIZED TOOL REMOVAL Patented The special Mueller tamper -proof operating wrench is con- structed of ductile iron and high strength alloy steel and will provide years of service in the hands of water and fire department crews. For existing Centurion and Improved Fire Hydrants, the tamper -proof feature is an easy retrofit. A new operating nut with its free -spinning cap is installed in place of the standard one using special but inexpensive tools. A valuable option for all Centurion and Improved Hydrants The Mueller tamper -proof feature helps to protect your hydrant investment and cut maintenance time. Unlike many other designs which typically use a magnetic locking approach, its straight -forward mechanical construction, installation and operation provide a high degree of relia- bility and durability. The Mueller tamper -proof feature can be counted on to deter theft of water and hydrant parts, discourage vandalism, and yet allow easy hydrant operation through a long lifetime of service.
