Backaround: The Sebastian Area Historical Society is requesting approval from the City of Sebastian to initiate a Historical Marker Application with the Division of Historical Resources, Bureau of Historic Preservation for Sebastian Cemetery in the Park Family Section, Block 41 as shown in Attachment. Should the City of Sebastian approve this request, a formal application will be submitted and a signature page will be forthcoming to the City from the State for execution. This grant request to the State will fund the placement of a historical marker in the Sebastian Cemetery in the Park Family Section, Block 41. There would be no cost to the city of Sebastian for the marker since the Indian River County Historical Society already has grant money to cover the costs. The City would be required to install the marker which is similar to the marker placed in front of the Chamber of Commerce building on Main St. The marker will be placed at the Park section of the cemetery as shown in the Attachment. BRIEF HISTORY: "August Park was born in Danzig, Germany in 1833. He came to New York and later moved to Fort Pierce, Florida. It was in 1865 that August Park became the first permanent settler in Sebastian, where he lived for 30 years. He married Pollyanna Gore and they had seven children, 5 boys and 2 girls. All the boys settled in Sebastian. "When the early settlers came to Sebastian to live, they didn't have any place to go to and August Park, our grandfather, would take them in and they would live with him until they looked around and found a place to settle," Lenora Park related. "Grandfather let a man, whose son had died, use his property to bury the body. People didn't have any place to bury their dead at that time and August Park agreed to allow them to use a section of his land. That was the start of what is now the Sebastian Cemetery. The Park Cemetery was donated to the city." If Aaenda Item Reauires Expenditure of Funds: Budgeted Amount: 0 Total Cost: 0 Funds to Be Utilized for Appropriation: Attachments: 1. It was in 1865 that August Park became the first permanent settler in Sebastian, where he lived for 30 years. "When the early settlers came to Sebastian to live, they didn't have any place to go to and August Park, our grandfather, would take them in and they would live with him until they found a place to settle," stated Lenora Park, granddaughter of August Park. August Park let a man, whose son had died, use his property to bury the body. People didn't have any place to bury their dead at that time and Park agreed to allow them to use a section of his 43 acres. That was the start of what is now the SebastianMunicipal Cemetery. The Park Cemetery was donated to the city and remains in use.. We, as the historical society of Sebastian, as well as Park family members who continue to live in Sebastian, would like to have a historic marker placed in the cemetery to inform visitors of its historic significance. When the application is approved, the marker would be ordered by the State of Florida. When the marker arrives the Society pays the invoice, and then requests reimbursement from the Indian River County's Tourist Development Council. The City of Sebastian would then install the Marker and maintain the area. I'm including in this presentation package the application form, sample of the Owner Approval Statement that the City would have to sign, supporting letter from the Indian River County Historical Society, photos and maps. If you need additional information, please contact me. We look forward to discussing this Historic Marker Application with City Council when it can be added to your agenda. Box 781348 Sebastian, Florida 32978 RE: Historic Marker Sebastian Cemetery Dear Kathy, For many years the Indian River County Historical Society has sponsored a program to place Florida Landmark signage at historical significance sites throughout Indian River County. Funding for this popular program comes from grant monies awarded to the Indian River County Historical Society from the Tourist Development Council (MC). These landmark signs must be applied for, reviewed, and approved by a review board at the Division of Historical Resources at the Florida Department of State. When approved the State of Florida orders the appropriate marker with text provided by local sponsor. When the marker arrives, the Society pays the invoice (average cost $2,100) and then requests reimbursement from Indian River County's TDC grant. Over the years, the Society has provided a successful marker program which has highlighted over thirty historical sites. Several have been In the Sebastian area Including the Paul Kroegel Statue, Hardee Oak, Community of Roseland, and Moore's Point. This year we are honoring the pioneer cemeteries in the early communities. Already, a historical marker has been placed at the pioneer cemetery In Winter Beach and we would like to unveil one at the Sebastian Cemetery. We are very happy to provide funding and participate with the Sebastian Area Historical Society in this undertaking. Thank you for your cooperation.
