RE: Miami Curb Description
The following is a verbal description of the Miami Curb system. I have also attached
drawings of the Miami Curb style and the "F" style curb and gutter for comparison
and a typical roadway cross - section to illustrate the location of the Miami Curb and
gutter.
Miami Curb Description
The Drop Curb as seen in the FDOT Index #300, which is more commonly referred
to as a Miami Curb, is a shallow profile concrete gutter located at the shoulder edge
of a road and is used as a the system of conveyance for rain water runoff. The runoff
can then be diverted into a main collection system by means of Inlet structures or
flumes. The Miami Curb is more versatile then a conventional "F" style curb and
gutter since the low profile permits the installation of driveways at nearly any location
along the edge without having to cut out a section and reform driveway entrance.
The low profile along the backside of the curb is also beneficial since it requires less
fill and eliminates a trip hazard to pedestrians. The Miami Curb is the curb of choice
with Florida developers since it permits land development infrastructure construction
without additional costs at a later date when homes are constructed and driveways
are installed. A drawing of the Drop or (Miami Curb) is attached along with a drawing
of an "F" type curb and gutter for comparison.
