Subject: Overtime Compensation for Civilian Personnel
Following conversations with Department Heads/staff and assessing the recent changes in the
City's policy regarding overtime compensation for civilian personnel, please refer to this memo
for all future overtime worked by hourly staff.
Effective, December 17, 2023 the overtime policy will allow staff to accrue time and a half
overtime regardless of any Sick, Vacation or Personal time used during the week in which the
overtime was earned. Employees may not accrue overtime until they exceed the number of
Comp time hours they have used within the same week.
This modification will offer a more equitable approach to compensating our dedicated staff. By
decoupling overtime accrual from Sick, Vacation or Personal leave utilization within the same
week, employees are provided with increased flexibility in managing their work schedules
without compromising fair compensation. This change will recognize the diverse needs and
commitments of our personnel, promoting a supportive work environment.
It is essential for Department Heads to monitor the implementation of this policy over the
coming months to gauge its effectiveness and address any unforeseen challenges that may arise.
Additionally, clear communication and guidance to employees regarding the revised policy will
be crucial to ensure a smooth transition and understanding of the new procedures. We need to
ensure that this policy is meeting the needs of both the City and its valued personnel.
