STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AFFAIRS "Dedicated to making Florida a better place to call home" Charlie Crist Thomas G.Pelham Governor Secretary FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: James Miller April 26, 2010 (850) 922-1600 Florida Communities Trust, City of Sebastian partner to acquire Sebastian Working Waterfronts Collaborative -Project aims to rejuvenate the community's fishing industry,provide a destination for fishing enthusiasts - TALLAHASSEE—The Department of Community Affairs announced that Florida Communities Trust today partnered with the City of Sebastian to purchase the land for the Sebastian Working Waterfronts Collaborative. The acquisition will promote and educate the public about the commercial fishing heritage of Sebastian and ensure that commercial fishermen of the Indian River Lagoon continue to have a place to unload their catch. The project was awarded funding during the Trust's 2008 grant application cycle for the Stan Mayfield Working Waterfronts Florida Forever Program. "Protecting Florida's traditional working waterfronts ensures that these coastal communities can continue their way of life for years to come. The City of Sebastian has a rich history steeped in the commercial fishing industry along the Indian River Lagoon, and I am pleased the city could partner with Florida Communities Trust's Stan Working Waterfronts Program to preserve and promote that legacy,"said DCA Secretary Tom Pelham. 1 • The two-acre property is located along the Indian River Lagoon, and represents ..Public%private 4 11 j' partnership between the City of Sebastian and Fisherman's Landing Sebastian, a non-profit working waterfront organization. The goal of the project is to rejuvenate the commercial fishing industry in c`J ! i J Sebastian and provide a destination for waterfront and fishing enthusiasts. f_ The acquisition will link several parcels together in an effort to educate the public about the commercial fishing heritage of the community through a retail/wholesale seafood house, exhibitions, educational venues and events. The property also features an existing docking facility that is currently used by clam fishermen for offloading their catch. Florida Communities Trust will award more than $3.1 million in Florida Forever funds for the acquisition and the City of Sebastian will contribute more than $351,000 in local match.
